Preventing Ingrown Hairs After a Wax
Two habits prevent almost all of them. First, protect the open follicles: no heat, pools, workouts or scented products for 48 hours. Second, start gentle exfoliation 48 to 72 hours after your appointment and keep it up two to three times a week — that is the single most effective thing you can do between visits.
Ingrown hairs are the main reason people give up on waxing, and they are largely preventable. Two habits do almost all of the work: protecting the follicles for the first two days, then keeping them clear for the rest of the month.
Why they happen
After hair is removed, the follicle stays open for a day or two. If dead skin builds over it before the new hair reaches the surface, the hair grows sideways instead of out. That is an ingrown hair — and if the follicle gets inflamed, it can turn into folliculitis or leave a dark mark.
Prone to ingrowns? Say so — the aftercare plan we give you is not the generic one.
The first 48 hours
No hot showers, saunas, pools, ocean water or workouts, and nothing scented on the area. Scented products are worth singling out: fragrance in an open follicle is a common trigger for reactions and pigmentation.
Then: exfoliate, gently, on a schedule
Starting 48 to 72 hours after your appointment, exfoliate the area gently two to three times a week. This is the single most effective way to prevent ingrown hairs, and it works because it keeps the follicle route clear rather than because it removes the hair.
Keep the skin moisturised with something fragrance-free. Dry skin over a healing follicle is exactly what traps a new hair.
Why the method matters too
Organic sugar paste bonds to the hair rather than gripping skin, and it is applied at body temperature. Hairs come out whole instead of snapping below the surface, which is why the ingrown risk with sugaring is very low compared with hot wax — and far lower than with shaving, where every hair is left with a blunt cut tip.
If one appears anyway
Do not dig. Keep exfoliating gently and let it surface; your esthetician can clear the follicle properly at the next appointment. For clients who get them often, our vajacial is built for this: deep cleansing, gentle extraction and follicle clearing, then a brightening mask that reduces post-wax pigmentation. It is $65 for members and first visits.
The routine that works.
- First 48 hours: no hot showers, saunas, pools, ocean or gym, and nothing scented on the area.
- Then exfoliate: gently, from 48–72 hours, two to three times a week — it keeps follicles clear.
- Moisturise: fragrance-free. Dry skin over a healing follicle is what traps the new hair.
- Never shave in between: a cut hair with a blunt tip is far more likely to turn back into the skin.

Why does sugaring have a lower ingrown risk than hot wax?
The paste bonds to hair rather than gripping skin and is applied at body temperature, so hairs come out whole instead of breaking below the surface.
Should I use a scrub or a serum?
A gentle exfoliating scrub two to three times a week, plus an ingrown hair serum if you are prone to them — we keep both at the spa and in the online store.
What do I do with one that has already formed?
Do not dig at it. Keep exfoliating gently and let it surface; at your next appointment the esthetician can clear the follicle properly.
Can a treatment help?
Yes — our vajacial targets ingrown hairs, uneven tone and post-wax sensitivity with deep cleansing, gentle extraction and a brightening mask. It is $65 for members and first visits.
Does this go away with time?
It improves. With consistent appointments most clients see finer, sparser regrowth within about six months, and fine hair is far less likely to become ingrown.
