Quick answer

Nothing about it is a test you can fail. You say what hurts and what you want from the hour, you undress to your own comfort level and stay draped throughout, and you can change the pressure at any point by saying so. Sixty minutes covers targeted work; ninety covers the whole body without rushing.

Your First Spa Massage: What to Expect

First massages come with more anxiety than they deserve, mostly about the parts nobody explains. So here they are, plainly.

Before the session

You will be asked what you want from the hour and whether anything hurts. The most useful answer is specific: “my lower back seizes up when I drive” tells the therapist more than “deep tissue”.

Mention health matters too — pregnancy, injuries, recent surgery, blood pressure, medication. None of them necessarily rule anything out; they change the plan.

First time? Say it when you book — the session is paced differently.

What you wear

You undress to your own comfort level and you stay draped throughout. Only the area being worked is uncovered, and it is covered again afterwards. Nobody expects a particular choice from you.

During

Pressure, room temperature, music, a spot that feels wrong — all of it is adjustable, and the right time to say so is when you notice it rather than in a review. Talking or staying silent are equally normal; the therapist follows your lead.

Which service and how long

For a first visit, sixty minutes is plenty: targeted work on back, neck and shoulders. Choose Swedish if you want to relax and deep tissue if you have a specific complaint. Ninety minutes is the full-body version at an unhurried pace, if you would rather start there.

Afterwards

Drink water and do not plan anything strenuous for the rest of the day if you had deep work. Some tenderness the next day is normal after deep tissue; it is not a sign anything went wrong.

Prices

Swedish: 60 minutes $145, or $125 for first-time clients and members. Deep tissue: 60 minutes $189 ($159). Prenatal: 60 minutes $169 ($145). Hot stones add $25 for members, $30 otherwise.

Before you go.

  • Say the reason: “my lower back seizes when I drive” is more useful than a service name.
  • Undress to your comfort: you stay draped; only the area being worked is uncovered.
  • Speak during: pressure, temperature, music, a spot that feels wrong — all adjustable on the spot.
  • Mention health: pregnancy, injuries, recent surgery, blood pressure and medication all change the plan.

First massage. Questions answered plainly.

How much do I take off?

Whatever you are comfortable with. You are draped the whole time and only the area being worked is uncovered.

What if the pressure is wrong?

Say so — immediately, not afterwards. Adjusting pressure is a normal part of the session, not a complaint.

Should I talk or stay quiet?

Either. Most clients say what they need at the start and then go quiet; the therapist follows your lead.

Which should I book first?

Swedish if you want to relax, deep tissue if you have a specific problem. Sixty minutes is enough for a first visit.

What does it cost?

Swedish 60 minutes $145, or $125 for first-time clients and members. Deep tissue 60 minutes $189 ($159).
